Good evening I'm so excited that we have such a large turnout for our first ever
district-wide kindergarten welcome event it's so exciting to be thinking about next year my name is Kathy Emerick I'm
the director of pre-k through elementary success so I get to know all the things about preschool and kindergarten all the
way through fifth grade and kindergarten is just such an amazing time for families and students and I know that
there are probably some of you who are new to kindergarten and some of your families are returning to kindergarten
with another student but either way we are just extremely proud of all of our classrooms in
Highline and especially our kindergarten programs our kindergarten teachers and learning
environments are arranged to meet students where they are we believe that we can support and grow
students develop to develop both socially and academically and whether you're in a dual language
program learning multiple languages or if you're just in a gen ed classroom
you're going to meet teachers who go out of their way to ensure that your children receive the best opportunities
to learn and grow meet friends they'll be loved and cared for and ready for all the future
learning that they get to have in high line until they graduate so we hope that this summer um this webinar tonight really
provides you with a great opportunity to learn more about what kindergarten is there'll be time for q a at the end
individual rooms there will be information given about that and then we really encourage you to
reach out to your home school and meet with the teachers meet with the principal get a tour of the school and
learn more about where your child will be going because it will be a loving beautiful place where your child is just
going to grow and forage so welcome to Highline welcome to returning kindergarten families
and just have a great night and a great lunch thank you kathy
so this evening we're going to be joined by several district leaders that are going to cover topics that you can see
here on our agenda some of the topics include things like enrollment or health
transportation meals language learning special ed and lots
more at the end as mentioned by kathy we'll invite families that might have
additional questions or need some one-on-one support to a zoom meeting
which will be a different link and we'll make sure that you have that easy to access at the end of our webinar tonight
um so my name is michaela white I'm the enrollment services manager and I'm going to be covering some talk topics
tonight about enrollment andParentVUE there might be lots of folks in the audience
that are currently in preschool that are getting ready to transition to kindergarten we might have brand new
families um that have just enrolled in kindergarten or families that are just getting their feet wet and haven't done
either of those um and so I want to take some time to share some
information about enrollment and ParentVUE and whatParentVUE is and why it's important
so families enrolled in Highline Public Schools are assigned to
school based on their primary location of residence we're a neighborhood school district
and um students that are currently attending preschool in Highline will automatically be assigned to their
neighborhood school as will students that are brand new enrolledParentVUE is Highline public school's
parent portal parents that enrolled new to the district were required to
create a ParentVUE account and families of students that are currently enrolled such as
current preschool students transitioning to kindergarten they'll be required to set up theirParentVUE account by
activating that account after enrollment and registration are complete parents can continue to use
parent view to view their children's assignments look at their grades in attendance as
well as message teachers each year after enrolling brand new
families are required to review and update their students information through ParentVUE
this is a process that we call enrollment verification and every august
families are notified um that it's time to update and review their child's information before the start of school
you will make sure you do that new enrolled families won't need to do this but current enrolled preschool
families will the the this process enrollment verification helps ensure that we have
updated home address it makes sure that our phone numbers are right and our emergency contacts are
reviewed and that health information is on file and these are all things that help us to keep students safe while at
school so um once you have set up or activated your
parent view account and once you have submitted maybe outstanding or required
enrollment documentation you'll pretty much be set for enrollment
and registration normally your neighborhood school will reach out
maybe by an email or or you'll get something in the mail welcoming you to their school community and that's how
you'll be rest assured that your enrollment's been processed and you're set to go so that
is how you know that your students enrollment and registration is complete
i wanted to share this evening some information about a new choice school that's opening up for our elementary
families that school is going to offer families the option to
do face-to-face learning in an online environment so it's virtual learning the
school is called Highline virtual elementary so students will have an option to learn
70 uh synchronous live instruction and 30 on their own
and um there is a limited number of seats for students in grades kindergarten through
fifth grade but if this is something that might interest you or you might
have some questions we encourage you to go on to the website and learn some more
the application is still open for consideration but space is limited so
we just wanted to share that with you since this is new
I'm going to hand it off to our student placement manager ebony booker
thank you michaela such a wonderful information you're sharing so I am on mckayla's team as well the enrollment
team and I am the student placement services manager my name is ebony booker um once again welcome
so we're talking about a little bit about transfers as you just learned more about enrollment and transfers such as
industry transfer requests are for those families who would like to request for their student who is a resident within
our district to transfer to a school that is not their assigned neighborhood school
transfer the this current transfer deadline to submit a request for the 2022-23
school year in september is may 25th we highly encourage you all to submit a request in
on time so your request can be reviewed and prioritized
um there are a few different categories that can be considered with an industry
transfer request and those are categories such as child care so for instance if your child
care provider lives within a service area that is not your neighborhood school that is the
reason some families submit requests we have district employee requests so if you work for the district you can select
that category if you have a sibling that happens to be attending a different school other than the one that you want
the sibling to that sibling to go to you can submit a request and select the sibling category for instance if there is a
sibling attending a dual language school that is not the neighborhood school and you like them to be together
um another transfer category that is considered is if you have a hardship now that
varies is per family household situation in the student situation so we highly encourage
you to submit a detailed letter I'm describing the situation more information can be found on our website
as well and that will be in the link for you to utilize thank you all take care
all right I think that's me good evening everybody um thank you so much for being here this is such an exciting time for
you to get ready for kindergarten uh my name is lyon terry I am the assistant principal at mount
view elementary one of our dual language schools and we are in the white center neighborhood I'm here to
talk I was a elementary school teacher for over 20 years and uh spent a lot of
time thinking about how to get kids ready for school and to have kids come to school ready to learn and to grow and
so I'm here to talk a little bit about kindergarten readiness and what you know life in kindergarten looks
like just a little bit about what to expect about kindergarten so if you can go on the next slide michaela
so before um just to know the first thing that the first opportunity your student has to go to school will be what
we call kindergarten jumpstart and jumpstart is a three-day program which
all the students enrolled at that school get to go before any of the other school kids get there
in the in august on 17th 18th and 19th of august and they get familiar with the school
building that get to learn some of the routines and get to know their teachers and their classmates and things like that and
the teachers get to know them a little bit so that they can then form the classes
and and make good choices for the kids and so we look forward to having kids in
the building and in those days in august I mean if if your student if you can't make it then that's fine too but um we
really encourage you to take the opportunity to have your kid enrolled um for jumpstart
after jumpstart you will then get communication from your child's teacher directly from the teacher whose ass your
child is assigned to um and they will contact you about uh welcoming meetings and uh and before
school even starts before the kindergarteners actually arrive they will have an individual meeting with the
parent and the family and the student and get to know again get to know the student individually by name strength
and need and you know they'll talk about their communication strategies and the ways
that you know you as a parent or a family member can you know trust um them
and get to know them what that what's going to happen um and then also in november there will be
parent-teacher meetings um uh just one other side note to know that some schools do have uniforms and
so you know if the school your child is enrolled at is requiring uniforms that would be something to to know ahead of
time um and so you'll find that on on the school's website
i think that's it for that a little bit let's go on the next slide please so
um a few guidelines for kindergarten readiness like we want students to come to kindergarten ready to to go um and so
if you look on the left hand side there the skills that help your child be successful in kindergarten
are things like putting independence skills like putting a coat on and you know putting their shoes on
or using the bathroom independently or cooperating and playing with peers
or or having or following two-step directions those are the things that really help
kids be ready for kindergarten we are not expecting our kindergartners to show up
knowing all of their letters and knowing all of their numbers and you know that sort of thing we have these basic kind
of social and life skills that are really helpful for our teachers so that when students arrive they can do those
things and you can support these things by doing all sorts of things you can read with your child every day i
want to highlight two things here i'll tell you I have um I have two
kids of my own I have a 19 year old and a 17 year old and from the day they were
born we've been well not so much when they're teenagers but from the day they were born through throughout elementary
school we read to them every single day as a family I did not teach my kids how to read even though I that's what I did
for a living was teaching kids how to read um I created the atmosphere for them to
become readers and then when they went to kindergarten my kids learned kindergarten first grade how to read and
into second grade and they the teachers do the magic of making helping kids learn how to read but we
love for parents to read to kids reduce their screen time talk to them about their lives and about things that happen
in the past to eat meals together with no screens on it's really great time to have you know model conversations with
your kids identify and discuss emotions with your students all of these things are things
that are great for your kid as they're getting ready for kindergarten
is to having those uh conversations with you and with their peers and having time to play with their
peers and learn what that feels like and looks like um so all of those things we don't expect
you to you know do all the academic work we expect you to do the kind of readiness work that's
listed here and there's also a great spot on the district website that lists
all of this kind of like a checklist for kindergarten readiness and I think someone's going to put that in the chat yeah there it is and so that's just a
great list of things that we would hope that families do at home to support their kindergartners being ready
that being said we do do academics and let's go on the next slide and we can see the the things we do
yeah what you can expect for your child to learn when they are in kindergarten you know reading and writing and math or
and science are still essential elements of what your kid learns in kindergarten so you can expect them to be taught and
to learn things like the naming and writing of upper and lower case letters and then learning how to match letters
um with the sounds that are created in the the sounds the letters make
and and they'll learn to practice in some of the what we call sight words or power words which are like the words
that are kind of unusual like and and the that don't really can't be sounded out
necessarily and but every day your students will read and talk about stories as well
and learn to be literate human beings and they will write stories and do research projects
and all of those things that help them learn how to read and and be writers in math they'll do a lot of work on
counting objects and understanding addition is putting together and subtraction is taking away
but they'll also learn about measurement and about geometry and three-dimensional objects and do lots of
integrated math and all sorts of ways in mathematics uh in the curriculum in
science is forces and balls and ramps and ecosystems they also learn a ton about animals we think that's really
engaging for kids to learn about animals they love that so that is some of the academic learning
just a snippet of some of the academic learning that your kids will do um
just remember like your your kid will learn how to read and to write at school but they won't learn it in the
first months of kindergarten right they're just getting adapted to life as a kindergartner
and uh and everything's gonna be really overwhelming at first but uh you know they will get there and uh and they will
be getting those basic skills let's just go on the next slide because this last one that I i have to talk
about um that oh yeah two more I'm sorry they will also your students also will have
music and physical education and library I'm sorry we didn't put that one on the slide but in music they will play with
instruments they will sing songs they will learn about beats and patterns and practice moving around
in physical education they'll learn games and activities and movement and health and so there's lots of
we call those classes specialist classes but they're not really they're just part of the regular learning that the kids
have is music and physical education and library in which kids learn from certificated teachers
so that's a lot of the academic stuff but if you're going to the next slide michaela
there is so much more that your students will learn in kindergarten and the kindergarten readiness skills that
you're doing already at home will be just great for them um because they will learn to talk about
their emotions they will learn they will participate in meetings and circles and learn about you know how to be a good
listener for of teachers and of classmates uh they will practice motor skills
um they will exhibit responsible and personal social behaviors that respect
others and themselves and they'll develop positive peer relationships all of these things are essential skills for
kids to be successful in school and to be successful in life we call these um broadly social and
emotional skills and it's just such a crucial aspect of
what your students and all students need in order to be successful in school is that they are learning to express
themselves and learning to feel and and develop positive relationships
especially across culturally you know we love Highline because it is so diverse and such a wonderful place with so many
different rich cultures and it's super important that our kids are learning to um respect and appreciate different
cultures so that's just a snippet of what your kids will be learning about in
kindergarten and we so look forward to having them especially for the jumpstart
and for the start of school in september thank you
hi all welcome I am michelle jervis I'm the assistant director of health services for highland public schools and
i am here um this evening to discuss how the district handles and supports
the health of your students next slide mikayla thanks
so um just to start off so the help the health requirements for entry will
include immunization requirements and you will receive information um on the needed
immunizations for your kindergarten or in your your transition packet
you can also contact your students school if your child has any specific health um concerns or
conditions um if they require any medications during school hours and please know that
all medications needed to be given in school will require a medical authorization form
um that will need to have a medical provider signatures and unfortunately it does include over-the-counter
medications as well things like aspirin advil any over-the-counter
medication that your student does take medication also needs to be in the original container
for example if you have an inhaler it needs to match the prescription that
is turned in on your medication authorization form if your student is eating school at
lunch and requires special dietary needs because they have peanut allergies gluten allergies lactose intolerance
any special requirements like that they will need to fill out a dietary prescription form and that also must
contain a medical authorization signature from your medical provider indicating that they agree with the
substitutes that we will be serving at school for school lunch if
your student is bringing lunch from home then this is something you wouldn't have to worry about um a dietary prescription is given to um
the nutrition services um and they will place an alert on your student's profile so when they come
through the lunch line um the cashier will auto automatically be alerted that that student has an allergy so they'll
look for um what is on your student's plate to make sure that they you know they don't
take anything that can cause them to um have an allergic reaction
next slide um just some general health information um
we do ask that if your child is sick to please keep them home um students should
be free of fever vomiting diarrhea without any medication for 24 hours before returning to school in some cases
students may be sent home with a request to have a physician clearance to return to school
um and if your child like has a rash please check with your physician um to make sure the rash is
not contagious before sinning um sending them back to school because things like
um we encounter things like ring worms hand foot and mouth disease that have that symptomatic and rashes develop with
that so we just want to make sure that students with those kind of things
unfortunately can't be in school because we don't want them to spread it to their classmates um if your child does become ill during the
school day you your designated emergency contact will be notified to pick up your child um and if an emergency arises we
will call 9-1-1 um and you of course to be notified um
we ask that you please keep your emergency contact information up to date so we have the correct telephone numbers
to contact um an adult who could come and get them students generally when
if they do become sick in school students um get directed to come to the
the student clinic um and if they're in there about 15 to 30 minutes um if a
nurse is there they'll do their assessment um and then a decision is made to either they can go back to class
or they need to go home we will also notif we will notify parents in some
cases um we typically notify parents when students um
they get bruises scrapes um any kind of physical injury that um you
can see and head bumps definitely we notify parents um
because we just want to make sure that you have that information that you're aware of symptoms um and so because
usually with head bump symptoms develop later on and so we we really take those kind of things seriously um
but students may be able to go back to class maybe they get a little you know cut their outside plate on the
playground and they um scrape we clean them up um let them sit and rest ice
and then um if you know if everything is looking good then we will send them back to class but again we we will notify you
um and then if you do have any questions and or any concerns just please contact your your neighboring your neighborhood
school where your student is attending and we can provide any more information thank you
hello my name is devin denney I'm the school district transportation director and i'd like to say welcome to Highline
public schools welcome to the yellow school bus um
if your child attended a high line preschool you've probably already seen our buses
and just a little difference between kindergarten preschool
your kindergartner will be on the bus with grades one through five
and um we give kids a ride in a school bus if you
live a mile or more away from your school or if getting to school on foot
would require your student to walk along a highway or cross a
hazardous roadway then we provide buses within a mile from your local
neighborhood school bus stop for all kindergartners as far as uh behavior on the bus we
would like kids to behave on the bus just as they do in the classroom that's not always easy for kids after a
long day of school but we we appreciate it when they do their best and we'll do our best
who to contact if you have a concern again my name is devin danny I'm the director
and um if you can always call me at the number listed below
we also have um usually in our office two folks who are fluent in spanish
right now we have one mr gerardo perez and he I think is tuned into this meeting
but again just call the main number and there's always someone to help you we answer the phone ourselves
you will not have to go through a uh a menu we'll pick up the phone live
from 5 30 a.m to about 5 30 p.m every day
your kindergartner when we start school out the first 10
days your child rides the bus we need you to be present to receive your child when
they get off the bus we want to know that the student knows his way home or he or
she knows their way home to your house and we just need you to be there first
couple of weeks make sure you're training them well and after that we can still have your
student met all year but we'll need to hear from you to set that up and then we can make sure that the driver doesn't
let your child go and again you can set that up by calling the number below
those are the basics for transportation and again uh we know that's brief so if
you have any questions give us a call and late august we post all the bus stops
for the next year on the district website and what you'll do is just look for a stop the stop closest to your home that
doesn't require crossing a busy roadway or walking along a major roadway
and that's all I have welcome
hi everyone my name is chris marsh and I am the assistant director and
of nutrition services and I'm also the dietitian for the department and I'm excited to be here today to tell
you about our awesome nutrition services team in Highline school lunch has come a long way and
we're working hard every year to bring new things to the menu and bring more recipes that students are excited
about and bring culturally relevant foods to the district Highline is special because
we have production kitchens so we have cooks and bakers in four of our production kitchens that are making
scratch soups and different spaghetti dishes or mac and
cheese and different baked items cookies and rolls so we have
a lot of great things going on and I'm excited for your kindergartners to come and eat with us
so what do school meals look like oh yeah thank you for next slide
so breakfast and lunch are available at school breakfast is um
a little bit different at each school it'll depend on what elementary school your child is at
we have a couple different service models either traditional breakfast
breakfast where they come into the cafeteria and sit down in the cafeteria to eat we have some schools that are
going to be breakfast in the classroom where um there are insulated bags that we deliver to the classroom and the kids
get to eat in the classroom and eat with their peers and teachers have kind of like reading activities in the morning
it's a nice community building time um and then also we have grab and go breakfast
where when they enter the building there may be different locations where they can grab breakfast it's just all all the
components are together like a cereal a fruit and a milk or bagel and cream cheese
we just have it bundled together they can grab it and go to their classroom um
let's see uh the menus we do have on our website um we have
it in two different locations you can look for the the fork I think and spoon um icon and
that will take you to our webpage and we have it listed out in elementary and secondary
menus but if you click on into those menus you can click
further in to see nutrition information on our my school menus page and it's like an interactive
menu where you can highlight over each item and it will tell you the ingredients and
nutrition facts of the food and you can also filter for allergens on
there which is really nice so if you have a student that has a food allergy or intolerance and
you'd like to know what items are okay for them then you can also
you can go on there and filter through that and you can work you know at the beginning of the week decide what your student
what days they want to eat at school so that's where you can find the nutrition information and the allergy
information and if you do have a student with
as michelle was saying if you have a student with an allergy or intolerance we do need a diet prescription filled
out um and so that would be filled out by your doctor or a medical
authority stating what the the food is that needs to be taken out
of their diet what approved substitutes are and also how the food affects the child
if they do ingest it what is the reaction so we're aware of what to look for
and then we're happy to help make those accommodations for your students
applications for free and reduced meals or income surveys will be available in august
so those as soon as we have a little bit more information we will be posting that the
surveys or the applications and surveys will be keep an eye out for those in august
and we're excited to see your students and excited to see them for jumpstart and
get them excited about school lunch so we do have our contact number on there if you do have any other questions
please reach out thank you
good evening everyone buenos noches my name is adina thiet and I am the
elementary dual language and language learning director also the director of
our finite fine arts programs in Highline but tonight I'm going to be speaking to you about our elementary dual language
programs and also our services for multilingual students
so what is dual language and Highline in Highline we offer dual language programs
in both spanish and vietnamese I also just want to say that we also
have after-school programs as well in spanish in many of our schools
but these dual language is a specific program that happens during the school day that I'm going to give some more
information about in dual language programs students spend half of their day learning in either
spanish or vietnamese and then half of their day learning in english
in the dual language schools reading writing and speaking are taught in both english and spanish or vietnamese
and then science is taught in spanish and vietnamese and social studies is taught in english and math is taught in
english
and so there are many benefits of dual language and we will in a moment
be showing you which schools are dual language and how if your school is not dual language how you could possibly go
to a dual language school so first of all dual language is good for the brain
being bilingual is good for your brain lots of studies that show that students in dual language have overall higher
academic achievement and when you're bilingual bilingual people have greater economic
opportunities than people who don't speak at least two languages and then also in our dual language
programs and in all of our programs but we make a special effort in our dual language programs that they really learn
about and respect each other's cultures and languages and really learn and become immersed um in another culture
students benefit most from dual language when they are enrolled in six years for
six years or more so that is something to think about if we actually have dual language it goes all the way through
high school and I'm thinking about if this is a commitment that you would really like to
make for your student um to become bilingual and biliterate and then even when they graduate high school they get
a special certificate if they pass um a test that says they're bilingual and
biliterate in two languages
um and so who is eligible to be in dual language programs
everybody everybody is eligible to be in dual language programs and dual language
is good for everyone and so all of our Highline students are welcome to attend
our dual language programs and there's numerous studies that show that all students can be successful in
dual language and so that includes students that may have an iep
students whose home language is not english or even spanish or vietnamese we have students in our um in our programs
that speak so many different languages from across the world and um and
and so it's it's they speak three or four or even five languages so that is not a requirement and also we have many
studies that show that students from all racial ethnic socioeconomic backgrounds um can reap all the benefits of dual
language and so everyone is accept um is eligible to be in this program
and now we're gonna have um molly ahedto our language learning technician talk a little bit about how
to get into a dual language program hi good evening everyone
so all elementary students are able to request a transfer to attend a dual
language program in Highline Public Schools however the pathway to attend a dual language school differs by the students
neighborhood school it's very important that students enroll in their neighborhood school first and then if
they'd like to request a transfer to a dual language program they can do that
i will put that link in the chat so you can get more information your neighborhood school can also assist
with the process to request placement at a dual language program if you need any help you are always
welcome to contact the language learning department and there's some more information on the
next slide
uh let's see so dual language schools these are these are the spanish dual language
schools hazel valley hilltop madrona midway mount view and white center heights does have a
dual language program there we do have partner schools
we do have partner schools for um the spanish dual language uh schools beverly
park with hilltop bow lake with madrona parkside with midway seahurst with hazel
valley and shorewood with mount view what that means is if there is a
dual language partner school request that is approved transportation is included with that transfer
there are other schools if you're not if your student is not in one of those partner schools you also can request
dual language enrollment with an in-district transfer from cedar hertz des moines gregory heights mar vista
mcmacon heights in north hill if that was if those are approved those do not include transportation as in
district transfers do not and there's more information on our website and I believe someone just put the link in the chat
to give you more information about how to request that enrollment next slide
we also have the vietnamese dual language program at white center heights of grades k through five
um oops sorry um and there are partner schools with the vietnamese program at
white center heights again with beverly park cedarhurst hazel valley mount view and shorewood
you can request that your student attend white center heights elementary in the vietnamese dual language program if
those partner school if a partner school transfer is approved transportation
would be approved also other schools that are on the list if
you request enrollment in the vietnamese dual language program that would need to be done through an in-district transfer
and if approved transportation would not be included with that again and there is more information on
our website about that
we also have in all of our elementary schools we also have multilingual student services and so if parents mark
if students speak another language other than english at home they may qualify to get some extra help
at school and all um students that say that they speak another or when the parents file the application if they indicate that
they speak another language at home they will take an assessment called the wida assessment to see if they qualify
for multilingual services students who do qualify for multilingual services can receive a variety of
supports depending on their needs that may include small group instruction
or extra support in class Highline teachers all of Highline teachers are trained in strategies to
best teach multilingual students our multilingual students are included in
everything that we do we have a full inclusion model and so the model of support that we have is really training
the teachers strategies to help students learn another language and and to just
provide extra support for students in class to help them learn whatever it is they
need to learn that day and so yes multilingual students are fully included and supported in core
academic instruction thank you and that's it
hello everybody my name is gay bungard I'm director of special education and I oversee pre-preschool through elementary
programs for students who have been identified with a disability so all of our students with ieps are
individualized education plans can receive services in a variety of ways
so all services that a student has in their iep um is aligned to the instruction they'll get when they enter
kindergarten some students will attend their neighborhood schools and receive their services there that may be through their
general education kindergarten teacher and a special education teacher in a resource room as well as their speech
and language needs and any motor needs they might have some students may require more support
and may be placed in other settings that will meet their needs best and this may be at their neighborhood school or it
might not be we have programs across the system where students receive support and transportation is provided
and all the services that your your child might need will be provided there um if your child has been in one of our
developmental preschools in Highline your teachers should have been scheduling meetings to discuss your child's plan for school plan for next
year so you can expect that or perhaps you've already had that meeting if you had have questions or concerns you can
bring that to your iep team or the principal at your school and they can always reach out to me as
well for any support you might need and as your child enters kindergarten we
always watch and take care to make sure students any student who may have a need is identified and so that process will
happen through the child's kindergarten classroom and staff at their kindergarten school
thank you
okay well that conclude concludes our presentation for today I'm going to
take a moment to open up um a quick poll for those of you that are
still on and attending um we're really curious about how you felt this evening went
um we would love to have feedback from you about um whether or not this was helpful
and we um welcome more feedback in an open written format and so we'll put in the
chat um our email address if you want to give us even additional comments or
um more information we also will put a link um to complete another more uh
lengthy survey um in the chat so that you can provide us details about how you are
feeling welcomed to Highline Public Schools as your students prepare for kindergarten
we really appreciate all of you that are on tonight and and came and joined us
um if you feel like you might need any additional support um maybe one-on-one
