Family Handbook

Dear Highline Virtual Elementary Students and Families,

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year! We are very excited to have you as part of our school.  In this handbook, you will find information regarding policies and procedures that help us to ensure a safe, positive, and productive school. Please take some time to review this handbook with your child. If you have questions, please let us know. We welcome your feedback, questions, and ideas. We look forward to working with you to support your child to grow and shine this school year!

Family Handbook

School - Student - Family Commitments

School

  • We will provide standards-based instruction to support student’s academic and social-emotional learning growth.
  • We will monitor progress and provide interventions and extensions accordingly.
  • We will communicate and partner with families about student’s progress and goals on a regular basis.
  • We will provide strategies for families to assist students with meeting their learning goals.
  • We will provide devices and learning kits to support online instruction.
  • We will provide opportunities for in person events to support learning and relationship building.

Student

  • I will actively participate in daily Zoom lessons with my camera on from 9:00-11:00 a.m. and 12:00-1:55 p.m..
  • I will complete weekly choice board activities including:
  • 2 iReady reading lessons
  • 2 iReady math lessons
  • 30 minutes of reading every day
  • Specialist lessons
  • I will do my best and follow our school/class expectations.
  • I will properly care for technology and learning materials from school.
  • I will discuss my learning goals and what I am learning with my family. 

Family

  • I will help my child set up a workspace that is free from distractions and will provide a place my child can access their learning materials. 
  • I will communicate and partner with teachers and the school on a regular basis.
  • I will support my child with attendance to their Zoom lessons and will contact the office if my child is absent.
  • I will support my child with reading for 30 minutes daily and completing their weekly asynchronous choice board activities. 
  • I will pick up materials to support online learning throughout the school year.
  • I will use ParentVUE to update online verification each year, check grades and attendance, and communicate with my child’s teacher.

About Highline Virtual Elementary

Highline Virtual Elementary is an online learning school serving students in kindergarten through 5th grade. Our school is designed to support students who thrive in a virtual setting. The staff at Highline Virtual Elementary will provide face-to-face experiences in an online environment and build relationships with students and families to deliver on Highline’s promise to know every student by name, strength and need.

Daily Schedule

9:00-9:30

Morning Meeting

  • Students engage in activities to build classroom community and grow their social emotional skills.

9:30-11:00

Learning on Zoom with Teacher and Classmates

  • Students actively participate in lessons with their cameras on (unless arrangements have been made with the teacher).

11:00-12:00

Lunch & Break

  • Students may join a lunch group or a club to socialize with peers. 

12:00-1:55

Learning on Zoom with Teacher and Classmates

  • Students actively participate in lessons with their cameras on (unless arrangements have been made with the teacher).

1:55-2:40 or flexible

Specialists

  • Students complete weekly PE, art/music, and library activities from their choice board.

  • Families can select a 45 minute block of time that works with their schedule to complete the activities.

2:40-3:30 or flexible

 

Choice Time

  • Students complete weekly activities from their choice board, including iReady lessons and the 100 book challenge.

  • Families can select a 50 minute block of time that works with their schedule to complete the activities.  

Friday Schedule: Students are done with Zoom classes at 1:30 PM. They should complete 30 minutes of Specialist activities and 30 minutes of 100 Book Challenge for their independent learning work.

Students can login using their QuickCard or by typing in their username and password.

Parents/guardians are able to view attendance, grades, and communicate with teachers. 

Download the mobile app or use your web browser to access ParentVUE. You will need your activation key from the school office to set up an account. (See ParentVUE Instructions)

Students will log in to Canvas every day to access their Zoom link, class schedule and learning activities.

Students can practice their reading and math skills with iReady lessons. Students should spend 30-45 minutes per subject per week.

Students can find and read eBooks aligned to IRLA levels or by units they are studying in class.
